Overview

e-Learning App for Lady Health Workers

In the ongoing project launched in 2023, DTDA is developing an e-Learning App for Lady Health Workers (LHWs) in Pakistan. There is an urgent need for an accessible and interactive training solution that can provide continuous professional development for these frontline health workers, who serve as the first point of contact for underserved communities. This digital platform is designed to digitize the government-mandated syllabus for LHWs, thus improving their capability to deliver high-quality healthcare services.

Project Description

The e-learning app digitizes the approved syllabus for LHWs, covering topics like family planning, maternal and child health, vaccine uptake, and communicable and non-communicable diseases. With this app, LHWs can gain improved access to education and training resources, enhancing their capability to provide vital healthcare services in their communities.

Designed with a user-friendly interface, the app accommodates the low digital literacy skills common among LHWs. It incorporates a culturally relevant virtual assistant and features a lightweight design optimized for unstable internet connections. To promote long-term learning and engagement, the app employs gamification techniques alongside evidence-based best practices in instructional design, such as Bloom's Taxonomy. The app presents an intuitive navigation system aided by graphical and interactive cues to reduce cognitive load for users with low digital literacy.

The app utilizes principles of emotional design to build a stronger connection with users, invoking feelings of positivity and motivation, enhancing overall user experience. Microinteractions, such as small, subtle animations, are also integrated to make the app more responsive and intuitive. Moreover, a consistent visual style that includes color schemes, typography, and iconography, is maintained throughout the app to simplify navigation and establish a cohesive brand identity.

Profile customization options are also incorporated to help users feel more connected and engaged with the app. The app also provides language and localization support, ensuring the text is in Urdu and designed to be easily readable for users with varying literacy levels.

A key feature of the app is its simplified navigation and onboarding. Clear instructions for using the app's features are provided, especially during the onboarding process. A virtual assistant, in the form of a lady health worker, offers pop-up directions for courses and navigation guidance, present on every screen to consistently assist the users.

The e-learning app breaks down learning content into easily digestible modules or lessons and organizes the content logically and hierarchically. It applies instructional design principles such as the "chunking" of information and use of learning pathways. The app also provides clear learning objectives and outcomes for each module to help users understand the relevance and purpose of the content.

Culturally appropriate visual elements like comic strips, presentations, infographics, illustrations, and videos are leveraged to enhance user understanding and engagement. An interactive element is also incorporated, with quizzes, exercises, simulations, and branching scenarios providing immediate feedback to users. The app also tracks users' progress and incorporates gamification elements to enhance user engagement and motivation. The app supports offline access and is optimized for low bandwidth or slower internet speeds. A comprehensive help section is included along with multi-channel support to address technical issues or content-related queries.

The app promotes a sense of community among users by integrating a discussion forum and enabling peer-to-peer learning and collaboration.

This project is being conducted in partnership with various healthcare institutions in Pakistan.

Project Outcomes and Impact

The e-learning app will significantly impact Pakistan's healthcare system, especially in rural areas. By digitizing the training process, we aim to make educational resources more accessible to LHWs, allowing them to better serve their communities. The app will promote access to updated curriculum and enhance the effectiveness of the LHW program, improving health services for vulnerable groups, particularly in areas of extreme poverty.

The project underscores DTDA's commitment to employing research-driven and human-centric design strategies in technology development. With the e-learning app, DTDA is taking a vital step towards bridging the healthcare access gap in Pakistan, empowering LHWs, and promoting equitable health system coverage.
